The C-U community is very generous to children at Christmas time through such projects as Shop With a Cop and the Salvation Army Toy Store. But the men and women we see every day are rarely remembered. For many, these backpacks are their only Christmas present.
Despite the COLD weather, on December 16, 2016, we gave away over 700 very generously filled adult backpacks for the 8th year in a row. All our guests were orderly, cheerful, and appreciative, despite standing outside in bitter cold for a long time. Our very own Dick Bennett entertained the waiting crowd as Santa and Stevie joined him as an elf! They passed out extra gloves, hats, and blankets to the many people waiting outside. The Friday crew made 900 delicious ham sandwiches (thank you, Harvest Market, who donated the ham at cost) and filled over 800 sack lunches. Greg Hatch did a great job passing out cookies to guests. Special thanks to Bob Goss, Dan O’Donnell, Joe , Jim Hiller, and Jim Hagle for supervising the long lines outside and braving the cold along with our guests! Thanks also to all the volunteers who showed up to help us sort and stuff backpacks and for the volunteers who helped hand out backpacks. And thanks to all of you who donated backpacks and to New Covenant Fellowship for allowing us to use their space for collection and distribution!
